Dino-Mite

BedRock Depot, an oasis in dusty dinosaur country, delivers mammoth refreshment.

By K e l ly Ba s to n e

With T-Rex tr affic threatening to swallow you whole, you might think Denver was the present-day land of the dinosaurs. But follow U.S. Highway 40 as it breaks away across northwest Colorado toward Utah to discover the real Jurassic Park—Dinosaur National Monument—and the two-pump town of Dinosaur, where the BedRock Depot keeps Homosapiens caffeinated.

Get ready to expand your coffee lexicon—in these parts, your fix is called a “lattesaurus” or a “mochasaurus.” But the beans are familiar: The BedRock brews Denver’s organic Allegro coffee. And java’s just the tip of the fossil quarry. BedRock co-owner Leona Hemmerich concocts her eight flavors of ice cream from scratch on premises; plus, she bakes her own sandwich rolls, ensuring that fresh-daily whole wheat or crusty sourdough envelops your roast beef and Cheddar. Browse the BedRock’s collection of local photography and gift cards, and, if available, grab a few chocolate truffles for the road. Yep—they’re house-made too, and they make Godiva taste like Nestle.
